Each organization have specific requirements related to their organization, so check their national website or have a chat with your favorite member!
The only NPHC-mandated requirement for membership eligibility is attending NPHC 101. Per the Criteria Statement of the Fraternity and Sorority Life Office, students must be full-time (12 credit hours or more), undergraduate students enrolled at UK. It also helps to have prior leadership experience, and community service, as most organizations will want to see your resume to know that you will represent their organization well.
It is recommended that you attend the organization’s programs and service projects to get to know them better. Once a member of NPHC, all organizations are required to participate in monthly service projects, and at least one educational program a semester.
Membership intake is the new member orientation and initiation program used by chapters of the National Pan-Hellenic Council. The intake process is organized by each chapter individually but includes: the selection of candidates, education about the organizations, initiation, and full membership in the organization (new member presentations).
The cost to join an NPHC organization varies from organization to organization, and the fees are subject to change at any time. Due to these organizations existing under a national umbrella, a significant portion of the funds go to the National organization, required conferences and conventions, local chapter dues, and other various items that may be needed for the membership intake process. Talk to the members of the organizations if you would like a better idea of how much they might cost.
In addition, there is the FSL Fee which shows up as "Greek Fee" on students’ online tuition bill. The fee is first assessed the semester in which a student joins and continues each semester of their membership. Beginning in Fall 2020, the FSL Fee assessed each semester to individual members joining the National Pan-Hellenic Council will be $30.
Most NPHC organizations require you to have completed at least 12 credit hours to be eligible for membership. Ultimately, it is the decision of each organization.
The best way to express interest in joining an NPHC organization is by attending chapter programs, events, and community service projects. Each organization/chapter hosts a variety of educational and social events on and off campus throughout the year, and by showing up and participating, you are letting them know you are interested in their organization. In addition, the organizations have interest/informational meetings that allow you to gain more knowledge about their organization/chapter, and express interest in their fraternity or sorority. Flyers about these events are mainly posted on the chapter’s social media as well as the FSL Office.
Amnesty clause: individuals or groups who come forward and want to change their chapter culture can be granted amnesty (AR 6:10 subsection VI)
